TAAHC is committed to supporting best practice in research management. Together, TAAHC partners provide a range of services to ensure that research within TAAHC is conducted in accordance with established ethical principles, guidelines for responsible research conduct and relevant legislation, regulations and institutional policies.
All research in Australia involving humans must comply with the principles set out in National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007).
Townsville Hospital and Health Service HREC
The Townsville Hospital and Health Service (HHS) HREC is the only National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) certified HREC in northern Australia. Certification enables the review and approval of multi-centred studies, across all research categories, allowing it to approve multi-site research for all partners. For multi-centred studies, agreement has been reached by all TAAHC partners to accept the Townsville HHS HREC approval. The Townsville HHS is supported by, and in collaboration with, its NHMRC registered colleagues at the Cairns and Hinterland HHS and JCU HRECs.
For more information, visit the THHS research ethics and governance website.
Far North Queensland HREC
The Cairns and Hinterland HHS operates the Far North Queensland HREC. The Far North Queensland HREC is an NHMRC registered committee that provides review and approval for research conducted within the Cairns and Hinterland and Torres and Cape HHS catchments.

All human research conducted within and or in collaboration with a Hospital and Health Service in Queensland requires local HHS authorisation. This is undertaken through the completion of a Site-Specific Assessment (SSA) to determine the suitability of a research study to be conducted and completed at a site and compliance with relevant legislation.
