The Community of Interest Webinar Series aims to create connections between clinician scientists (of all disciplines), academic health researchers and clinicians who are interested in research (but not sure where to start).
The Communities of Interest webinar series aims to connect healthcare professionals, clinician researchers and academic health researchers across northern Queensland and beyond to support research collaboration, translation and knowledge exchange.
Held the last Wednesday of each month from 1pm - 2pm, each webinar features a guest speaker who will provide a brief presentation on their research work, followed by a facilitated open discussion exploring future projects, challenges and opportunities and potential for collaboration.
Each webinar will focus on a particular health challenge of relevance to northern Queensland and aligned with the TAAHC Research Themes. Every quarter the webinar series will be hosted by the TAAHC Women's Health Research Translation Network with a special focus on women's health research.
If you are an experienced researcher, new to research or interested in research but not sure where to start, join us at an upcoming webinar to connect with colleagues and learn more about health and medical research in northern Queensland.

Dr Margaret Jordan, James Cook University
"Identifying the genetic causes of Multiple Sclerosis"
Dr Jordan is currently employed as a Senior Research Fellow in Molecular and Cell Biology, College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences, James Cook University. She worked in Cytogenetics for several years, prior to undertaking a PhD in Immunogenomics in 2011. Upon completion, she was awarded the prestigious NHMRC/MSRA Betty Cuthbert Early Career Research Fellowship. Subsequently, she has been CI and AI on Category 1 research project grants from Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (MSRA) and NHMRC as well as having gained support from several national and international funding bodies, including a seed grant from TAAHC as well as from WHRTN. Her academic role includes both research and teaching duties, where she contributes to 2nd and 3rd year teaching to Science, Pharmacy and Medical Students. She coordinates the Honours’ programme, and contributes to the HDR student supervision, participates as HDR milestones’ Chair and Independent Academic as well as via active participation on the CPHMVS Research Education Committee. She has contributed to Human and Animal Ethics for several years. Dr Jordan is a current member of Neuroimmunology Australia, Australasian Society of Immunology and Australasian Genomic Technologies Association, and is involved in organising national and international conference meetings. Her current research focus is on the immunogenomics of MS, where she uses human-based studies and mouse models of the disease, to unravel the underlying genetic pathologies. She has published several prestigious journal articles, and she reviews for scholarly journals and granting bodies.
Associate Professor Donna Rudd, James Cook University
"Baby poo and wee, exploring the wonders of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and beyond"
Donna has been involved in Medical Laboratory Science in a variety of capacities for over thirty years. She has extensive experience in both private and public laboratories and was awarded a PhD in Physiology and Pharmacology (2012). She is currently the course coordinator Medical and Clinical Sciences at JCU. Her research interests include all things Clinical Biochemistry and she is currently involved in projects for investigating improved diagnostic markers for renal disease in neonates, neonatal and adult gut microbiome and nutritional supplementation for the improvement of mental health and the utilization of pathology services, particularly the implementation of Point of Care Testing.

Dr Lea Merone is a medical Dr from the UK. After emigrating to Cairns in 2016 she completed her master of public health and tropical medicine and obtained her fellowship of the Australian Faculty of Public Health Medicine. She is about to complete her part-time PhD examining androcentricity in medicine.
